This collection is largely unprocessed. The collection contains various records of the Fonda family including accounts, receipts, invoices, deeds, promissory notes, and correspondence. Included in the collection are a number of items relating to the operation of a general store by Jelles Fonda in Caughnawaga, (now Fonda) N.Y. Other family members represented include Peter and Jacob Fonda. Several ledger and day books from family members and associates are included. Some of the material in this collection relates to provisioning troops during the American Revolution. Many land records related to Tryon County, N.Y. are included. Also included are records related to African American slaves, Native Americans and Loyalists.

In the 18th century Jelles Fonda settled in the Mohawk Valley in what is now Fonda, N.Y. He acquired a considerable amount of land in the valley and operated a general store. During the French and Indian War he served as an officer in the local militia under Sir William Johnson. Fonda later served as a Colonel in the Tryon County militia during the American Revolution.
